![]() Summa Institute Grand Opening! Mark your calendar! Summa Institute’s Grand Opening Festivities are on Thursday, January 24th from 5:30 – 8:30 pm 2510 SW 1st Ave, Portland OR 97201 Wine & Cheese Reception Ribbon Cutting at 6:00pm, followed by Presentations and Tours Family Tours Begin At the end of November we began hosting family tours of the building. It felt wonderful to show off the building and begin the enrollment process with families who have been following us for years. Families were very impressed with the building and excited to envision themselves beginning this amazing journey at Summa Academy. ![]() Looking west from the Heart of the Academy The building, at 2510 SW 1st Ave., will be finished in January! There are two classrooms downstairs for the younger children, a grand sweeping reception desk, offices, a conference room for professional development, and a very large “messy room” for art and science. Upstairs we have plenty of space for projects in what we call the Heart of the Academy, plus four learning labs for media and technology, social studies and humanities, mathematics and language arts, music and performing arts, plus the Directors’ offices. We are thrilled with the learning environment that is shaping up and we look forward to touring you all through it at the Academy Grand Opening on January 26th, 2013. ![]()

Through face-to-face interaction with children and colleagues, a new world full of possibilities takes shape every day. That’s the beauty and reward of human connection. Now, imagine a place where education, families, children and teachers intertwine and are attentively encouraged to grow together. Here at Summa, educators are a core part of our vision of a child-centered, family supportive, educational community, sustained by mutual respect in which inspiration and wisdom emerge. Ba and Josette Luvmour, founders of Natural Learning Relationships, will be hosting a 4 hour workshop for educators and anyone interested in working at Summa Academy. This event will be on December 15th from 10am-2pm at the Hillsdale Public Library and is free of charge. Winter Family Fun: The Relationship Advent Calendar A Summa community member shared this idea with us and we wanted to pass it along to all of you. “When my kids were very little, we started a great family tradition that has entirely changed the holidays for us. We have a homemade advent calendar (24 numbered matchboxes decorated by the kids and glued to a yardstick). Every year, I put a piece of paper in each one with a family activity. We do one activity together as a family every day of December until Christmas. The activities can be very simple - play a game together, polish each other's toe nails, go out for ice cream after dinner, walk around the neighborhood to look at lights, etc. or a little more involved - dress in fancy clothes and see a show, volunteer at a soup kitchen, etc. The kids tell me every year that advent is the best part of Christmas for them. We do exchange gifts on Christmas morning, but the focus of the holiday for us really is on being together and enjoying each other's company.” If you create such a new “tradition” in your family, we want to hear about it. Share with us your favorite part of the holiday season.
